Context:

Welding is one of the most important and technical aspects of steelwork fabrication. Welded connections are critical to the strength and stability of structural steel frames. It is not alarmist to suggest that the failure of one welded connection can seriously compromise the ability for a structure to resist the design loading and may even cause failure of the structure. Both the engineer’s and fabricator’s understanding of welding practice and how that relates to design outcomes is therefore of paramount importance.

Course structure:

The course comprises two separate but related parts:

  • Part 1 – This current course examines the implementation of the welding process, covering the pros and cons of different welding processes, in particular those commonly utilised for structural steel. Welding inspection, documentation and quality control are also extensively covered, providing the engineer a very good understanding of what is required to ensure the welded structure meets the performance intent of AS/NZS 1554, AS/NZS 5131, AS 4100 and the national Construction Code.
  • Part 2 – The companion course explores the design of welds and welded connections as one might find typically in steel framed industrial buildings or commercial and residential buildings. We will be looking at procurement perspectives, basic weld strength, weld group design and the important behavioural aspects. Parts 1 and 2 of this course may be purchased and undertaken separately, for those who need to focus on either implementation or design respectively.
